JAREBA, or the Jamaica Association of Real Estate Brokers and Appraisers, was established in 1966 by a group of dedicated Jamaican real estate professionals who aimed to bring structure, professionalism, and ethical standards to the local industry. Initially a small organization focused on uniting brokers and appraisers, JAREBA became a significant force in Jamaican real estate, advocating for industry-wide regulations and integrity in business practices. This dedication laid the foundation for a nationally respected institution that shaped legislative reform. By 1970, JAREBA evolved into the REALTORS® Association of Jamaica (RAJ) after becoming an affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), aligning Jamaica’s real estate practices with international standards. This shift allowed RAJ to embrace a global network, expand resources, and enhance training for local agents and brokers, raising professional standards across Jamaica. While RAJ is now the central professional body for real estate in Jamaica, the legacy of JAREBA persists in its foundational role in establishing structured real estate practices and in promoting transparency and accountability within the industry, both locally and in line with international benchmarks.
