Thetford Great House

Thetford Great House, located in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica, has a rich historical background. Colonel Thomas Fuller was granted the Thetford estate as a reward for his role in the 1655 British capture of Jamaica. He and his wife, Catherine, later donated 30 acres of land from their estate to build St. Dorothy’s Church, an important community landmark. Although the exact date of construction for the original house is unknown, it was destroyed over time, and some of its remains can still be seen today. In the late 19th century, a new two-story Jamaican Georgian house was built on the property by Vincent Verley. The Thetford estate, like many historical properties in Jamaica, has changed over the years but still reflects the island’s colonial past, offering insight into the history of land ownership and architectural development.
