    Parish: Manchester

The New Broughton United Church, originally established as a Presbyterian church, is an iconic early 19th-century structure that reflects both historical and architectural significance. Constructed between 1837 and 1842, the church is built from finely cut stone and mortar, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship of the era. Its architectural design features a single-storey configuration with a raised roof level, creating a strikingly elevated appearance. The main entrance is graced by an elaborate portico, a hallmark of Roman architectural influence, adding grandeur to the otherwise simple and robust structure.

Beyond serving as a spiritual center for its congregation, the church played a pivotal role in the community’s social and economic development. It was instrumental in founding key institutions, including an orphanage that supported vulnerable children, the New Broughton People’s Cooperative Bank, which fostered financial independence, and a branch of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, aimed at improving agricultural practices and supporting local farmers. These initiatives underscored the church’s commitment to holistic community empowerment.

In 1965, a significant ecclesiastical milestone was achieved when the Presbyterian Church of Jamaica merged with the Congregational Union of Jamaica, forming the United Church of Jamaica. This union symbolized a broader effort to unify denominations and strengthen the impact of the Christian faith across the island. Today, the New Broughton United Church remains a treasured landmark, embodying the rich cultural, architectural, and spiritual heritage of Manchester parish while continuing its legacy of service and community engagement.
