Cedar Valley is a community located in the parish of Saint Thomas, Jamaica, situated at approximately 17.99°N latitude and 76.58°W longitude. The area is known for its rich history and contributions to the cultural tapestry of Jamaica.

    Historical Background

In the early 19th century, Cedar Valley was associated with coffee production. Records from 1799 indicate that Francis Webber managed a coffee estate in the area, and by 1825, Thomas Cowan was documented as overseeing Cedar Valley, which had 81 enslaved individuals at that time. These historical accounts highlight Cedar Valley’s involvement in Jamaica’s plantation economy during that era.

    Notable Individuals

The community has been home to individuals who have made significant contributions, particularly in sports. Carrie Russell, born on October 18, 1990, in Cedar Valley, Saint Thomas, is a distinguished athlete known for her achievements in track and field as well as bobsledding. Her diverse athletic career has brought recognition to the area.

    Local Governance

Cedar Valley plays a role in the local administrative framework of Saint Thomas Parish. In March 2022, businessman Louis Chin, representing the Cedar Valley Division, was sworn in as Chairman of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Morant Bay. This event underscores Cedar Valley’s involvement in the political landscape of the parish.

    Geographical Connections

The community is interconnected with neighboring areas through various roadways. Notably, Somerset branches off from the Trinityville Main Road, which also provides access to Mount Lebanus and Cedar Valley.  This connectivity facilitates movement and interaction among the communities within Saint Thomas Parish.

In summary, Cedar Valley in Saint Thomas, Jamaica, is a community with historical significance in agriculture, notable contributions to sports, active participation in local governance, and strong geographical ties to surrounding areas.
