FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Kingston, Jamaica
Date: Wednesday 22 October 2025
Storm Update
The south-central Caribbean is hosting Tropical Storm Melissa, now under close watch as it moves slowly toward Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center reports that the storm is producing maximum sustained winds of approximately 50 mph (80 km/h).
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica. Forecasts indicate the system may approach the island late this week and could strengthen into a hurricane if conditions—such as warm sea-surface temperatures and low wind shear—favour intensification.
One of the major threats is heavy rainfall: eastern Jamaica could receive several inches of rain, with even higher totals possible if the storm slows further. The National Hurricane Center warns of 2 – 4 inches in western Jamaica and up to 5 – 10 inches in parts of Hispaniola, increasing the risk of flash flooding and landslides.
Surf conditions are expected to deteriorate, with rough seas, strong rip currents, and dangerous coastal waves as the outer bands approach.
Property Owner Advice: How to Prepare & Protect Your Home
For homeowners and property owners across Jamaica — especially those in flood-prone, coastal, or hillside areas — here is a practical checklist to help safeguard your property.
1. Secure the Exterior
- Bring in or tie down loose outdoor items such as lounge furniture, potted plants, garden tools, and construction materials.
- Trim overhanging branches or trees near buildings to prevent roof or window damage.
- Inspect and secure roof coverings — ensure shingles, zinc sheets, or tiles are firmly attached.
- Reinforce doors and windows; if possible, use shutters or plywood to cover vulnerable openings.
- Clear beachfront areas of debris and check that sea walls or barriers are intact.
2. Manage Drainage and Flood Risk
- Clean gutters, downpipes, and drains to allow rainwater to flow freely.
- Remove leaves, trash, or other blockages around your yard and driveways.
- Check retaining walls and slopes for signs of weakness or pooling water.
- Move vehicles, tools, and valuables from low-lying areas to higher ground.
- Review your insurance coverage and confirm if storm or flood damage is included.
3. Prepare Utilities and Emergency Systems
- Charge all mobile phones, power banks, and essential devices.
- Keep extra fuel for generators and test that they work safely.
- Stock an emergency kit: flashlight, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, and waterproof storage for documents.
- Protect rainwater tanks and wells from contamination.
- Ensure your evacuation route is clear and accessible.
4. During the Storm
- Stay indoors and keep away from windows.
- Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters.
- Move to the most secure interior room if winds intensify.
- After the storm passes and once it’s safe, inspect your home for damage and take photographs for insurance purposes.
5. Timing and Uncertainty
Forecasts show Jamaica may experience impacts later this week, but the storm’s path remains uncertain. It could slow or shift, bringing prolonged rainfall. Begin preparations immediately and stay updated through the Jamaica Meteorological Service and the National Hurricane Center.
Final Word
Even if Jamaica avoids a direct hit, outer rainbands can cause flash floods, landslides, and gusty winds capable of damaging property. The best protection is early action. Clear drains, secure roofs, safeguard valuables, and remain alert to official advisories.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and look out for your neighbours.
