Seaview Gardens is a vibrant community located in the St. Andrew South section of Kingston, Jamaica. Known for its deep connection to reggae music, it is the hometown of several reggae superstars. Musicians like Dexta Daps have honored the area in their songs, reflecting both the challenges of violence and struggle, as well as the strong sense of community and culture. For example, Dexta Daps pays homage to the area in his lyrics, even referencing the warmth of Shabba Ranks’ mother cooking, famously known as “Shabba Madda Pot.” The neighborhood also features in the popular T.O.K. song “Footprints,” further solidifying its place in Jamaica’s music scene.

In recent years, Seaview Gardens has experienced local activism, with residents taking to the streets in October 2017 to protest the poor road conditions that plagued the community. In a more positive development, the Jamaican government responded in December 2017 with the opening of a Drug Serv Pharmacy at the community’s health center, improving access to essential healthcare for local residents.

The Resource Jamaica Has Always Had and Never Fully Valued: The Case for Its Creative People

By Jamaica Homes NewsJune 25, 20261

Jamaica’s creative economy contributes over $107 billion to national GDP and influences global culture far beyond its size. But the island’s greatest resource has always been its people — and the question now is whether Jamaica is building the conditions to fully honour that.
