    Parish: St. Mary

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church, located in Retreat, St. Mary, is a stunning example of historic Georgian architecture. It was built in 1828 on land donated by Henry Rigg, a wealthy sugar planter from Westmoreland, England. Born in 1791 in Bowness, Rigg moved to Jamaica and made Retreat his home, where he lived for 35 years until his death in 1869.

The church is constructed from a mix of brick, cut stone, concrete, and wood, reflecting the materials commonly used in Georgian-style architecture. Positioned on the site of an old sugar estate, it is a testament to the colonial era’s influence on both architecture and society in Jamaica. The church, with its elegant design and historical significance, not only serves as a place of worship but also as a reminder of the island’s colonial past and the role of the sugar industry in shaping its communities.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church remains an important cultural and historical landmark in St. Mary. Its preservation stands as a tribute to the legacy of Henry Rigg and the enduring architectural style of the Georgian period, offering a glimpse into Jamaica’s early 19th-century heritage.
