Negril Lighthouse

Negril Lighthouse is a historic landmark located on the westernmost tip of Jamaica, near the town of Negril. Standing tall on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, it is one of the oldest and most well-known lighthouses in the country, guiding ships safely along Jamaica’s rugged coastline for over a century. The Negril Lighthouse was built in 1894 by the French company Barbier, Bernard, and Turenne. It was constructed during a time when lighthouses were crucial for maritime navigation, especially in the Caribbean, where treacherous reefs and sudden storms posed significant risks to ships. The lighthouse was originally powered by kerosene, but it has since been modernized and now operates with solar energy, reflecting a blend of historical significance and contemporary sustainability. The structure is made of concrete and stands at 66 feet (20 meters) tall, with its light extending 100 feet (30 meters) above sea level.
