Hopewell, Jamaica – A Coastal Fishing Village with Rich History

Hopewell is a picturesque seaside town and fishing village located in Hanover Parish, Jamaica, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Montego Bay. Nestled along the island’s northern coastline, this vibrant community is known for its fishing industry, scenic beaches, and historical landmarks, making it a notable destination for both locals and visitors.

Fishing plays a vital role in Hopewell’s economy, with a small fleet of fishing boats operating from the beach west of the town center. Many locals depend on the sea for their livelihood, catching snapper, kingfish, and other Caribbean seafood. One well-known local fisherman, named Earl, recently made headlines when he rediscovered his long-missing fishing equipment—an event that became a lively topic of conversation in the close-knit village.

Hopewell is also home to the Round Hill Hotel and Villas, a prestigious beachfront resort that has long been a retreat for celebrities, dignitaries, and luxury travelers. The resort features exclusive private villas, stunning ocean views, and lush tropical landscapes, making it a prime destination for those seeking tranquility and sophistication. Nearby, the historic Round Hill Estate adds to the area’s charm and appeal.

A unique attraction in Hopewell is Old Steamer Beach, located west of the town center. The beach is named after the U.S.S. Caribou, a wood-hulled steamer built in 1887 that drifted from its moorings in Montego Bay (Mobay) and eventually washed ashore in Hopewell. Today, visitors can still see remnants of the vessel, with its hull and timber visible beneath the waterline at low tide, while its rusted boiler protrudes a few feet above the waves, serving as a historical landmark and a distinctive sight for explorers and history enthusiasts.

The town also serves as an entrance to several nearby districts, including Camp, McQuary, Lookout, and Bamboo, each offering lush greenery, rolling hills, and ocean views that add to Hopewell’s charm.

With its blend of rich history, coastal beauty, and vibrant local culture, Hopewell is more than just a fishing village—it is a hidden gem along Jamaica’s northern coast, offering visitors a truly authentic and unforgettable Caribbean experience.

The Resource Jamaica Has Always Had and Never Fully Valued: The Case for Its Creative People

By Jamaica Homes NewsJune 25, 20261

Jamaica’s creative economy contributes over $107 billion to national GDP and influences global culture far beyond its size. But the island’s greatest resource has always been its people — and the question now is whether Jamaica is building the conditions to fully honour that.
