Morant Bay Fort is a historic military fortification located in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica, near the Morant Bay Courthouse and overlooking the picturesque harbour. Likely constructed around 1758, the fort was originally designed to house nine guns, serving as a coastal defense structure during a period when Jamaica faced threats from European rivals and the possibility of pirate attacks. Built from brick and cut stone approximately four inches thick, Morant Bay Fort exemplifies 18th-century military architecture in the Caribbean. Each gun was mounted on elaborate cast iron carriages, and although time has worn down much of the original equipment, three impressive 24-pounder cannons remain. These cannons, manufactured in the early 19th century, stand as a reminder of the fort’s defensive role and historical significance.

In addition to its military functions, the fort once included a magazine for storing gunpowder and ammunition and a barracks for housing soldiers, forming a critical defense hub in Jamaica’s colonial era. Morant Bay Fort is not only architecturally significant but also deeply tied to the social history of Jamaica. It, along with the nearby courthouse, became central to the events of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion, a significant uprising led by Paul Bogle and other activists protesting injustices faced by the black population. The fort witnessed the turbulent confrontations between local residents and colonial authorities during the rebellion, which ultimately led to reforms in the island’s governance and a shift toward greater civil rights for its people.

Today, Morant Bay Fort stands as both a historical landmark and a symbol of resilience, representing Jamaica’s colonial past and the enduring spirit of those who fought for justice. This site draws visitors interested in Jamaica’s military and social history, offering a window into the colonial defense strategies and the pivotal moments of resistance that shaped the nation.

The Resource Jamaica Has Always Had and Never Fully Valued: The Case for Its Creative People

By Jamaica Homes NewsJune 25, 20261

Jamaica’s creative economy contributes over $107 billion to national GDP and influences global culture far beyond its size. But the island’s greatest resource has always been its people — and the question now is whether Jamaica is building the conditions to fully honour that.
