St Elizabeth is Jamaica’s ‘breadbasket’ — the most agriculturally productive parish, feeding much of the island from its flat southern plains. But it also harbours some of Jamaica’s most alternative tourism gems: the Black River Safari with wild crocodiles, the offshore Pelican Bar, Treasure Beach’s laid-back fishing village vibe, and the spectacular YS Falls.

British take Jamaica — St Elizabeth’s fertile plains ideal for sugar and livestock.
1700s
Extensive sugar estates; Black River becomes a significant trading port.

Emancipation — small farming takes over as plantations break up. Breadbasket role begins.
Late 1800s

Today
Alternative tourism around Treasure Beach and Black River growing steadily.

St Elizabeth is one of Jamaica’s most affordable real estate markets. Land prices are low, agricultural acreage is available, and the Treasure Beach community has created a niche alternative tourism market with modest guesthouses and villas. Black River town has undervalued heritage property.
