$4.4 Billion Portmore Resilience Park Due for Completion Later This Year

The $4.4 billion Portmore Resilience Park is expected to be finished later this year, according to the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), which is building the 18-acre facility for sport, recreation and entertainment.

UDC Chairman Norman Brown gave the timeline on 9 July while outlining several of the corporation’s current projects. He predicted the park would rank among the best facilities of its kind in the Caribbean once complete.

Shaped by residents

Loy Malcolm, the UDC’s Deputy General Manager for Planning Development and Project Management, said the design grew out of deliberate consultation with people in Portmore, who were asked what they wanted from their park.

Sport, wellness and entertainment came out on top. As a result, the plans include one of the largest jogging tracks in Jamaica, courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball and pickleball, an indoor events complex and three acres of open green space for community use. Ms Malcolm said nearly everything residents requested is being built in.

Built to keep running costs down

Sustainability featured heavily in the design, Ms Malcolm added. Irrigation will draw on wells on the site and rainwater harvesting, and low-maintenance materials are being used to limit long-term operating expenses.

Sherlock Glenister, Deputy General Manager for Subsidiary Management and Revenue Generation, said the park will also earn income to pay for its upkeep. Commercial spaces will be offered for lease, while gazebos and event areas will be available to rent for private functions such as birthday parties.

The project is funded by the Government of Jamaica.

What it means for Portmore residents

Portmore is one of the island’s largest residential areas, and good public amenities are among the things buyers and renters weigh when choosing where to live. A large, well-maintained park with sports courts, a running track and event space could make surrounding neighbourhoods more attractive to families. The self-funding model also matters: facilities that pay for their own maintenance are more likely to stay in good condition over time.
