Tropical Storm Melissa has intensified to a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds now at 80 mph. The National Hurricane Center confirms Melissa crossed the hurricane threshold overnight, driven by warm sea surface temperatures and a continued environment of low wind shear across the central Atlantic.
The NHC forecasts gradual intensification over the next 48 hours. Melissa continues tracking west-northwest and remains on a path that keeps Jamaica and the northern Caribbean within the five-day cone of uncertainty. The Jamaica Meteorological Service has upgraded its outlook and a formal Hurricane Watch is now considered likely within 72 hours if the current track holds.
Hardware stores in Kingston, Montego Bay, Spanish Town, and Mandeville are reporting significant queues at lumber, roofing supply, and fastener sections. Supermarkets across the island are seeing increased traffic for canned goods, bottled water, and batteries.
ODPEM is urging residents not to delay preparations. No action beyond preparation is warranted at this time but residents in coastal and low-lying areas should have a clear evacuation plan in place.
Preparation checklist for homeowners and renters:
- Board up or shutter windows and glass doors.
- Stock at least seven days of water and non-perishable food per household member.
- Secure outdoor furniture, potted plants, and all loose items.
- Fill your vehicle with fuel now, before queues form at petrol stations.
- Identify the nearest government-designated shelter and plan your route.
- Keep copies of important documents in a waterproof bag or container.
- Charge all devices, power banks, and ensure your torch batteries are fresh.
ODPEM will issue further advisories as Melissa’s track becomes clearer. Residents are reminded that formal warnings can arrive with as little as 12 to 24 hours of lead time in fast-moving systems.
