Reserves Gone by 2041? Dublin’s Catholic Archdiocese Spends €3 Million a Year More Than It Takes In

Ireland’s largest Catholic diocese is spending more than it earns, and its reserves could run dry within 16 years, the Irish Times reported in November 2025, based on the Archdiocese of Dublin’s 2024 financial statements.

The archdiocese serves 1.1 million Catholics across 188 parishes, with 361 priests, most of them older. There were no ordinations in 2024 and only two since 2020, and priest numbers are expected to fall by 70 per cent within two decades.

In 2024 total income was €31 million, down from €31.1 million, while spending stayed at €34.2 million. First collections, which support priests, fell from €14.3 million to €14.1 million. Second collections, which support parishes, rose slightly from €5.6 million to €5.7 million. Central staff salaries came to €2.8 million for 44 employees. On current assumptions, cash reserves would be used up by 2041.

The accounts noted that the average age of regular Mass-goers keeps rising, while younger people attend less often. In response, the archdiocese’s Building Hope plan groups the 188 parishes into 53 partnerships, with priests serving several parishes.

The numbers matter for property because churches with falling income and fewer clergy usually end up rethinking their buildings, and in Dublin that means land. For Jamaican church boards, the lesson is to watch the gap between income and spending early, because every year of deficit makes it more likely that a church hall, a presbytery or a plot will have to be sold to fill it. Clear accounts, like those Dublin publishes, make those decisions easier to plan.
