About Spanish Town
Spanish Town — Villa de la Vega to its Spanish founders — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western Hemisphere. Founded by the Spanish in 1534 and serving as Jamaica’s capital until 1872, it holds more colonial-era heritage than any other Jamaican city. The Spanish Town Square is considered the finest Georgian square in the Americas — the Rodney Memorial, old King’s House, and the Court House form one of the Caribbean’s most impressive colonial ensembles. St Catherine’s Cathedral is the oldest Anglican cathedral in the Western Hemisphere outside the British Isles. Today, Spanish Town is a major commercial and industrial hub, serving as the administrative centre of St Catherine parish — the most populous outside Kingston.
