Five dangerous fugitives are worth the public’s attention this week: lies, hypocrisy, hatred, pride and the love of worldly pleasure. All five are considerably harder to catch than an ordinary escaped prisoner, mainly because they rarely look like fugitives from the inside. They tend to travel disguised as reasonable opinions, understandable grudges, or simple self-interest.
If any of the five turn up, the instinct to confront them alone is usually the wrong one. Scripture consistently frames this kind of struggle as one that needs outside help rather than private willpower: prayer, honest confession, and accountability to other people do more against pride or hatred than a private resolution ever manages on its own.
The harder case is when one of the five has taken up residence quietly, not as a dramatic escape but as a long-term houseguest nobody has gotten around to evicting. Hypocrisy in particular rarely announces itself; it is usually visible to everyone except the person hosting it. That is exactly why community, other people willing to say something honest, matters more than solo self-examination.
None of the five will be caught by ignoring them or hoping they wander off. They are caught the way most real change happens, slowly, through confession rather than concealment, and with other people involved rather than as a private project undertaken and abandoned alone.
