Redeemer Lutheran Church in Balboa, Panama City, has been restored and rededicated, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Reporter said on March 8, 2024, in a report by Megan Mertz.
The church was founded in 1948 by a US military chaplain. In 1999 the building was transferred from the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Panama. The restoration replaced the sanctuary roof and underlayment, treated the walls for mould and repainted them, replaced the windows and restored the original pasta tile floor. The second floor of the parish hall received new plumbing and electrical systems.
Nearly 200 people attended the dedication on February 4, 2024, including Panamanians, Indigenous Kuna people, expatriates, missionaries and partner church leaders. “The church is more than just the building; it is the people. With the restoration work completed, we have the opportunity to revitalize the congregation, renew our presence in the Balboa area and serve as an example of God’s faithfulness to all our congregations in Panama,” said Rev Dr Arthur Rickman.
The report did not give the cost of the work.
Some Jamaican churches were built decades ago and now need new roofs, rewiring and mould treatment. Balboa’s restoration shows a practical sequence: fix the roof first, then walls, windows and services, while preserving original features. Partner churches abroad can help fund such work.
