Launched in New York for a School in Belize City: A Diaspora Fund to Keep a Church College’s Buildings Standing

An Anglican school in Belize City has a new source of money for its buildings, organised largely from overseas. Breaking Belize News reported on 24 June 2025 that Friends Supporting the Anglican Diocese of Belize (FSADB) had launched the ACC Infrastructure Endowment Fund for Anglican Cathedral College.

The fund is dedicated to the long-term upkeep and development of the college’s campus, with the aim of giving students a high-quality learning environment. Belize City Council made the first official contribution of BZ$10,000.

The announcement was made at a guest speaker welcome dinner in New York City, ahead of FSADB’s scholarship gala. Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, an alumnus of the college who has become its patron, attended with councillors Kaya Cattouse and Allan Pollard. Others named in the report included FSADB president Dr Claude Stuart, ACC board chairman Jeffrey Locke, Ambassador Carlos Fuller, Dr Bernard Bulwer and Bishop Wright. The report summed up the message: when Belizeans invest in their youth, they invest in the nation’s future.

No target amount for the endowment was given in the report.

An endowment differs from a one-off appeal. The money is invested, and the income pays for maintenance year after year, so that roofs, classrooms and facilities are repaired before they fail rather than after.

Jamaica has many church-owned schools whose buildings rely on stretched budgets and occasional appeals, and past-student associations abroad often raise money for them. The Belize model suggests going further: a dedicated, invested infrastructure fund, launched where the diaspora lives, that can support a school’s buildings for decades. Jamaican church school boards and alumni groups could consider setting up similar endowments.
