The Anglican Diocese of Toronto owns more than 400 properties, including churches, halls, rectories, cemeteries and land, across nearly 200 parishes and missions. In September 2025 its director of property resources, Mac Moreau, set out in The Anglican how the diocese plans to use them.
The first version of a Strategic Property Plan was adopted by Synod Council in September 2024. In June 2024, the diocese seeded a Pre-Development Fund with $5 million, with about $1.5 million more expected from selling non-strategic properties. Parishes have invested $19.2 million in capital projects since Synod 2023, and more than $3 million in grants and loans has supported nearly 20 parish real estate initiatives.
The diocese is also looking at bringing Anglican housing projects together into one entity, which could unite more than 1,000 units into one of Toronto’s largest non-profit housing providers, with a pilot expected in 2026. Existing examples include the St Hilda’s seniors community with 500 affordable units, 110 units of affordable and supportive housing preserved at All Saints, Sherbourne and St David, Donlands, and a 50-bed shelter on the former St John the Divine property.
Moreau described “property stewardship as a living expression of discipleship, rooted in our faith and directed toward justice, sustainability and mission.”
Toronto has one of the largest Jamaican communities abroad. The diocese’s approach, a written property plan, a fund for early-stage work and a single housing entity, is one the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and other Jamaican denominations could learn from as they decide what to do with their own land.
