A Tropical Disturbance in the Central Atlantic Is Worth Watching, Meteorologists Say

A tropical wave emerging off West Africa has caught the attention of Atlantic hurricane forecasters. The National Hurricane Center’s five-day Tropical Weather Outlook has assigned the system a 30 percent chance of development as it moves west-northwest at roughly 15 mph across open Atlantic waters. The Jamaica Meteorological Service is monitoring the system, though no watches or warnings are currently in effect.

The wave has displayed pronounced deep convection and a broad, low-level circulation. Sea surface temperatures across the central Atlantic are running above average and wind shear in the region remains relatively low. Both conditions are favourable for tropical development.

Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs through late October, and forecasters note the basin continues to support active storm development well into autumn. The majority of such waves weaken as they interact with dry air and competing weather systems. However, the combination of warm water and low shear means this one deserves continued attention.

For residents of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, this is a routine alert but one worth following over the next several days.

• Review your hurricane supply list and replenish any expired items.
• Ensure you know where your nearest hurricane shelter is located.
