NHC Upgrades Atlantic Disturbance to Tropical Depression — Jamaica on Extended Outlook

The National Hurricane Center has designated a Tropical Depression in the central Atlantic, roughly 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph, with a gradual strengthening trend expected over the coming 48 hours as the system tracks west-northwest over warm open water.

In response, the Jamaica Meteorological Service has placed Jamaica on an extended outlook — a precautionary status that means a tropical system is within a window of potential impact but has not yet warranted a formal watch or warning. Residents are encouraged to pay closer attention to forecasts over the next several days.

The system is currently tracking west-northwest at approximately 12 to 14 mph. If it continues on this heading without significant recurvature to the north, it could reach the outer Caribbean within seven to ten days. NHC track models show a spread of possible paths, with some scenarios bringing the system close to the northern Caribbean island chain.

Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has begun monitoring the depression and is coordinating with parish disaster preparedness committees. No evacuation orders, formal hurricane watches, or warnings have been issued at this time.

Steps households should take now:

• Assemble or review your household emergency kit — water, canned food, medications, torches, and important documents.
• Secure or identify items in your yard that could become projectiles in high winds.
• Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel.
• If you live in a flood-prone or coastal area, know your evacuation route and have a plan to leave quickly if ordered to do so.
• Check in with elderly or mobility-limited neighbours and begin making plans to assist them if conditions deteriorate.

ODPEM and the Jamaica Meteorological Service will issue updated advisories as the system’s track and intensity become clearer. Residents should not wait for a formal watch to begin preparing.
