A 1903 Church Stays a House of Worship: Hobart’s Lindisfarne Uniting Church Sold to Become a Mosque

A century-old Uniting Church on Hobart’s eastern shore has been sold and will become a mosque, ABC News reported in December 2025.

Lindisfarne Uniting Church, built in 1903, will become the House of Guidance Hobart, a mosque for the Hobart Muslim community, with healthcare workers Hood Al Dawahdeh and Hebah Kaljeh behind the project. It will offer Islamic education, Arabic classes and interfaith dialogue. The sale price was not disclosed.

Rohan Pryor, the Uniting Church Tasmania synod’s liaison minister, welcomed the outcome: “What we really appreciate is that this will continue to be a place of community gathering, of reflection and worship, and for wellbeing and care.” Al Dawahdeh said: “It has been serving the community for more than a century, and the House of Guidance Hobart will continue this legacy.” Kaljeh added: “We love everything here, and for this reason we wanted to stay.”

Rosalind Terry, a retired Uniting Church minister, said: “We give God a different name. But we all worship the same God.”

When churches sell buildings, other faith groups are often among the buyers, because they need a hall suited to worship. Churches in Jamaica deciding who to sell to must weigh price, community use and their own beliefs. Denominations should set clear policies before they sell, so each sale does not become a painful debate.
