Jamaica’s Real Strength Will Be Measured in the Rebuilding

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen has urged Jamaicans to transform the country’s celebrated resilience into collective action as communities continue rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa.

His message was delivered by the Custos of St. Thomas, Marcia Bennett, during the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Church Service at the Olson Memorial Church of God in St. Andrew on Sunday.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “United in Celebrating Resilience,” Sir Patrick said Jamaica’s history was not shaped by an absence of hardship, but by its people’s ability to confront it.

Emancipation in 1838 and Independence in 1962, he noted, were defining moments that demanded courage, responsibility and national purpose. In 2026, that responsibility has taken another form: repairing homes, restoring businesses and rebuilding communities.

Yet resilience, he argued, must mean more than simply surviving. It is found in neighbours clearing debris, churches supporting displaced families, emergency workers restoring essential services and ordinary citizens refusing to leave others behind.

There is, after all, little value in celebrating national strength if those still grieving or living amid damaged communities become invisible.

Sir Patrick said the Emancipation and Independence period should renew Jamaica’s commitment to compassion, service and unity.

“Resilience is not simply survival,” he said. “It is the determination to rebuild, to restore, and to believe that tomorrow can be better than today.”
