From €750,000 to €375,000: A 170-Year-Old Cork Church Returns to the Market at Half Price

A historic church in Cork city is back on the market at half its earlier asking price, the Irish Examiner reported in September 2026. St Vincent’s Church in Sunday’s Well is listed at €375,000, down from €750,000 in 2018, after University College Cork withdrew from an agreement to buy it in May 2026.

The 170-year-old red sandstone Gothic church covers 12,000 square feet over two levels: the protected church at street level and a former community hall of 2,926 square feet below. The 0.58-acre site includes an 18-space car park. The Vincentian Order stopped holding services there in 2016.

The church has painted Stations of the Cross from a Normandy school, a pulpit of Caen stone and marble carved by Henry Lane, and stained-glass windows by Mayer & Co of Munich and William Wailes of Newcastle. Its 36-stop, 2,000-pipe organ by Telford’s of Dublin needs restoration. It was designed by John Benson in the 1850s, with later work by George Goldie and Samuel E Hynes in the 1880s.

Agent Gerard O’Callaghan of Lisney suggested uses including a religious organisation, funeral home, school, hospitality venue or homes, subject to planning and fire safety requirements. Given its size and parking, he called it “the bargain of the century”, while cautioning that buyers should budget heavily for conversion.

The price cut shows how hard it is to sell large, protected churches, even in a city. A buyer gets a lot of building for the money, but conversion, fire safety and heritage work can cost far more than the purchase. For Jamaican churches with large historic buildings they no longer need, and for diaspora investors attracted by low prices, the lesson is to cost the whole project, not just the price tag.
