GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Guyana’s Ministry of Housing is negotiating to acquire about 15 acres at Cane Grove, Region Four, to create a formal housing scheme for residents living on land they do not legally own, News Room Guyana and Stabroek News reported on 2 and 3 December 2025.
The land is currently leased to a cattle farmers’ association; an alternative site was ruled out because no state land was available there. The Central Housing and Planning Authority and the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission are working with private leaseholders on the acquisition. About 55 residents have signed up to have their occupation regularised, News Room reported.
Earlier regularisation exercises in 2011–12 formalised more than 180 lots in the area, but a 2023 inventory found more than 50 structures that were still unregularised, according to Stabroek News. Housing Minister Collin Croal and Vanessa Benn, Minister within the Ministry of Housing, are leading the effort.
What it means
Analysis: Giving occupants legal title turns informal homes into property that can be mortgaged, insured and passed on. In former sugar-estate communities such as Cane Grove, that can unlock household wealth and local lending that has been out of reach.
