Highgate
About Highgate
Highgate is an agricultural market town in the interior of St Mary, set in the lush hills south of the north coast. The town developed as the commercial centre for the surrounding sugar and banana estates and retains an active market character, with a busy town square and regular trading days. St Mary’s interior is extraordinarily fertile — the parish is sometimes called the ‘Garden of Jamaica’ — and Highgate is surrounded by working estates, banana plantations, and small-scale farms producing fruits, vegetables, and cash crops. The town lies on the main interior road connecting the north coast to Castleton Botanical Gardens and Kingston via the Wag Water valley — one of Jamaica’s most scenic interior drives through limestone hills, rivers, and rainforest.
