About Savanna-la-Mar
Savanna-la-Mar — often shortened to ‘Sav’ by locals — is the capital of Westmoreland parish and serves as the commercial and administrative hub for Jamaica’s western south coast. Situated on a flat coastal plain (the Spanish name means ‘savannah by the sea’), the town has been buffeted by hurricanes throughout its history — most notably in 1780 and 1912 — yet always rebuilt and persevered. Today Sav is a lively market town with a busy transport square, fishing community, and a growing real estate market as infrastructure improvements make it more accessible. The town sits midway between Negril to the north-west and Black River to the east, making it a natural base for exploring Jamaica’s south-western corner.
