Advent – a season in the Christian calendar observed in many Western churches during the weeks leading up to Christmas. The word comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” Advent is traditionally a period of expectant waiting, reflection, prayer and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Beyond remembering Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, Advent also points Christians towards the promised return of Jesus. It therefore carries a double meaning: looking back to the first coming of Christ and looking forward in hope to His coming again. Themes commonly associated with Advent include hope, peace, joy and love, with churches often marking the season through Scripture readings, prayer, Advent wreaths and the lighting of candles.
