Habitability means that a place where people live, like a house or apartment, must be safe and healthy. This is important in Jamaica and all over the world because it ensures that landlords (the people who own the property) provide homes that are comfortable and suitable for living. For a home to be considered habitable, it needs to have things like working plumbing, enough clean water, electricity, and be free from pests like rats or insects. For example, if you rent an apartment in Kingston, it should not have leaking pipes or holes in the roof. If there are serious problems, like mold or broken windows, the landlord must fix them so that the place is safe to live in. If a landlord doesn’t keep the home in good condition, tenants (the people living there) can ask for help to get things repaired, lower their rent, or even end their lease if the problems aren’t fixed. The idea of habitability helps make sure that everyone has a decent and healthy place to call home. It holds landlords responsible for keeping their properties safe and ensures that tenants can live comfortably without worrying about dangerous conditions.
