In Jamaica, the Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) is a unique nine-digit identification number assigned to individuals and businesses for tax purposes. It is a mandatory requirement for all Jamaican residents and entities engaging in any financial or legal transactions, including opening bank accounts, registering property, obtaining a driver’s license, or applying for loans. The TRN serves as a critical tool for the Jamaican government to track and manage tax obligations and is necessary for both personal and business-related activities. Whether you are employed, self-employed, or operating a business, the TRN is an essential part of your financial identity. It is issued by the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) and can be obtained by submitting an application along with valid identification documents, such as a passport or birth certificate, at any TAJ office or online. The TRN is a lifelong number that remains the same even if there are changes in your name or address, ensuring continuity in tax-related matters throughout your life in Jamaica.
