Historical Context

How Jamaica's Global Nation Was Built

The Jamaican diaspora was not built in one generation. It is a century-long story of movement, ambition, hardship, and resilience.

1880s–1910s
The Panama Canal generation. Tens of thousands of Jamaicans built the canal and settled in Central America. The first mass wave of labour migration establishes the Jamaican instinct to go where the work is.
1948–1971
The Windrush era. The Empire Windrush arrives at Tilbury Dock in 1948. Hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans travel to Britain, forming the foundation of the British Jamaican community now numbering close to 800,000.
1962
Independence changes the calculation. Jamaican independence shifts the political identity of the diaspora but accelerates US-bound migration. The US Immigration Act of 1965 opens a door that would define the next six decades.
1970s–1980s
The US and Canada waves. 327,779 Jamaicans migrate in the 1970s alone. New York, Toronto, and Miami develop thriving Jamaican communities. Remittances become a meaningful part of the national economy.
1990s–2000s
Consolidation and cultural export. The diaspora stabilises while Jamaican music — reggae, dancehall, ska — becomes a global cultural force. Bob Marley's legacy reaches every country where Jamaicans have settled.
2010s
The property investment turn. As Jamaica's economy stabilises, diaspora interest in buying property at home accelerates. The NHT diaspora mortgage programme attracts returning investors. Remittances climb steadily toward $3 billion.
2018
The Windrush Scandal. Thousands of British Jamaicans are wrongly targeted for deportation. The scandal reshapes British Jamaican political identity and accelerates conversations about dual nationality and returning home.
2020–2022
The pandemic pivot. COVID-19 disrupts migration but not remittances — flows accelerate as diaspora communities double down on supporting family at home. Remote work opens a new conversation about returning to Jamaica without sacrificing income.
2025/26
US$3 billion crossed. The first fiscal year to receive more than US$3 billion in diaspora remittances — 16.2% of GDP. The British Jamaican Chamber of Commerce launches. Diaspora investment in property hits record levels.
