Churches From £60,000, Manses Over £335,000: 20 Church of Scotland Properties on the Market

The Church of Scotland had 20 properties on the market in May 2022, from historic churches to manses and flats, the Scotsman reported, as it began reviewing its portfolio to close buildings that are little used.

“The Church of Scotland is to review its current portfolio of buildings, with a view to closing those little used and now surplus to requirements,” the report said.

Examples included Portsoy Church and Hall on Seafield Terrace, built in 1844 and B-listed, at offers over £60,000; St Andrew’s Church on Glamis Road, Kirriemuir, built in 1903 and C-listed, at offers over £84,000; Stanley Manse on King Street, Stanley, Perthshire, a four-bedroom house built in 1890, at offers over £335,000; and Westruther Parish Church in the Scottish Borders’ Lammermuir Hills, at offers over £85,000.

The listings show the same pattern seen across the UK: church buildings sell for modest sums, while manses fetch much higher prices because they are ready-made homes. For Jamaican churches with rectories and manses, the residential property is often the most valuable asset. For diaspora buyers, Scottish church sales offer a path to unusual homes or projects, but listing status and conversion costs must be weighed.
