A Mountain Chapel With Harbour Views: Anglesey’s Capel Tabor Could Become Luxury Holiday Accommodation

A redundant chapel high on Holyhead Mountain in Anglesey could be turned into luxury holiday accommodation, Herald.Wales reported in November 2025.

Capel Tabor, a Congregationalist chapel, was built in 1904 to replace an earlier chapel from 1848. It stands in an elevated position with views over Holyhead port and the Eryri mountains, in the village of Holyhead Mountain about two kilometres west of Holyhead and south of Breakwater Country Park. The chapel was sold in March 2024.

The applicant, D Clowes, represented by Cambrian Planning, proposes a two-bedroom holiday let aimed at walkers and tourists. The plans involve removing the front entrance hall and an asbestos-roofed lean-to store, and creating a vaulted living space with a mezzanine bedroom, two en-suite bathrooms and roof lights, along with parking within the site.

Because the area is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area, Anglesey County Council received a request for a screening opinion on whether an environmental impact assessment was needed.

Wales has hundreds of closed chapels, and many are becoming holiday lets in scenic places where tourism is strong. For Jamaican investors and returnees, the model is familiar: character buildings in beautiful locations can earn good money from visitors. But protected landscapes bring extra planning checks, and removing asbestos and adding services add cost. The same questions apply to old churches and mission buildings in Jamaica’s hills and coastline.
