PARAMARIBO, Suriname — Suriname’s National Housing Fund has been brought into operation with an initial government deposit of SRD 20 million, six years after the law creating it was passed, the government announced on 11 December 2025.
President Jennifer Simons formalised the fund by presidential resolution on 10 December (S.B. 2025 no. 141). The enabling legislation, S.B. 2019 no. 142, was approved by the National Assembly on 21 November 2019 but the fund had not been activated. A second, larger injection of money is planned for 2026, according to the government and Starnieuws.
The fund is intended to finance the construction and renovation of affordable homes, sustainable housing, and upgrades to vulnerable neighbourhoods. It is overseen by the Minister of Finance and Planning and the Minister of Social Affairs and Housing.

What it means
Analysis: SRD 20 million is a modest starting sum, but the fund gives Suriname its first dedicated channel for affordable housing finance. How quickly the promised 2026 top-up arrives will show whether it becomes a meaningful source of subsidised lending.
