KINGSTON, Jamaica — The United States (US) dollar on Monday, January 19, ended trading at $158.26, down 4 cents, according to the Bank of Jamaica’s daily foreign exchange trading summary.
The Canadian dollar closed at $115.14, up from $114.30, while the British pound ended the session at $212.43, up from its previous close of $211.58.
The Jamaican dollar edged up against the greenback but weakened against both the Canadian dollar and the pound during the session.

What it means for property buyers and the diaspora
Canadian and British remitters sending money for property taxes, insurance or repairs back home saw their funds go a little further. For those paying US-dollar rents or holding US-dollar mortgages, the small dip in the greenback brought a slight easing in local-currency terms. On a transfer of US$50,000 toward a home purchase, even a few cents on the exchange rate can shift the Jamaican-dollar total by several thousand dollars, so buyers are wise to watch the trend rather than any single day.
