KINGSTON, Jamaica — A small home does not need an enormous window to feel bright. The Lantern Shed House turns its roof into a carefully controlled source of daylight, lifting one section into a tall clerestory that washes the main room with light while keeping the walls private and shaded.

It is a response to a familiar Jamaican challenge. Homes need daylight and ventilation, but unprotected glazing can also bring heat, glare and rain. The concept tries to resolve that contradiction through section rather than expensive equipment.
A roof that does more
From the road, the house reads as a compact masonry volume beneath an unusual stepped metal roof. One high strip of protected clerestory windows faces away from the harshest sun, with operable louvres and weather hoods designed to admit air while controlling wind-driven rain. The lower roof projects over a simple front veranda, making an outdoor room for everyday use.
Inside, the living and dining area sits beneath the tallest part of the roof. Bedrooms and bathrooms occupy the lower, quieter end. A continuous service wall simplifies plumbing, while shaded side windows provide views and cross ventilation where the site permits.
Light is not the same as cool
High-level openings can help warm air escape under suitable wind and temperature conditions, but the building would still need a carefully insulated roof, secure insect screening, rain protection and a sensible orientation. A clerestory placed badly could turn the main room into a greenhouse. This is a design study, not a guarantee of passive cooling.
The structure is intended to be legible and buildable: a simple engineered roof frame, galvanized metal sheets, masonry walls, timber shutters and durable, accessible guttering. The stepped roof creates additional junctions that require particularly careful waterproofing and wind-uplift detailing.
Modest scale, memorable form
The Lantern Shed House could suit a narrow but serviceable lot in St Catherine, Clarendon or St Mary, especially for an owner who values a bright communal room and a compact footprint. Its character comes from the roof silhouette and the changing quality of daylight, not from luxury finishes.
The Lantern Shed House is an editorial architectural concept, not a completed or commissioned building. Any actual project would require site-specific architectural, structural, thermal, drainage and regulatory design.
