About Black River
Black River is the capital of St Elizabeth parish and the commercial hub of Jamaica’s tranquil south coast. The town sits at the mouth of the Black River — Jamaica’s longest river — which winds through a vast mangrove wetland rich in wildlife. The famous Black River Safari takes visitors upstream through mangroves teeming with American crocodiles, egrets, and dozens of bird species. St Elizabeth is known as Jamaica’s breadbasket, and Black River serves as the market town for the parish’s prolific agricultural output. The town centre retains a number of well-preserved Victorian buildings from its late-19th-century commercial peak, when it was reportedly the first town in Jamaica to get electricity.
