A sacrament is a sacred Christian rite through which believers express and experience God’s grace, presence and promises. Sacraments use visible acts or elements, such as water, bread and wine, to represent deeper spiritual realities.
Christian traditions differ on how many sacraments they recognise. Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches recognise seven, while many Protestant churches chiefly recognise Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, or Communion. In Jamaica, sacramental practices vary widely across denominations, but baptism and Communion remain among the most familiar expressions of Christian faith and church life.
