Scripture refers to sacred writings regarded as authoritative within a religious tradition. In Christianity, the term usually means the Bible, including the Old Testament and New Testament, which Christians read for teaching, worship, guidance, encouragement and understanding God’s relationship with humanity.

Scripture includes history, law, poetry, prophecy, wisdom, letters and accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In Jamaica, Bible reading and quotation have long formed part of church life, family devotion, schools, music and everyday speech, which is one reason biblical phrases remain familiar even outside formal worship.
