Christ is a title given to Jesus, meaning “Anointed One.” It comes from the Greek word Christos and corresponds to the Hebrew term Messiah. In Christianity, calling Jesus “the Christ” expresses the belief that He is the promised Saviour sent by God to bring salvation, reveal God’s character and fulfil the hopes expressed throughout the biblical scriptures.
The title is central to Christian belief because it identifies Jesus not simply as a teacher or prophet, but as the Messiah. In Jamaica, where Christianity has deeply influenced worship, music and everyday language, references to “Christ” remain common in churches, hymns, gospel music and public expressions of faith.
