About Discovery Bay
Discovery Bay holds a unique place in Caribbean history: it is widely believed to be the site where Christopher Columbus first landed in Jamaica in 1494 — calling the bay Puerto Seco (Dry Harbour) due to the absence of freshwater streams. Today the bay retains an extraordinary natural beauty with calm turquoise water, a protected horseshoe shape, and lush hillside surroundings. The town developed significantly in the 20th century as a bauxite export port — the Kaiser Bauxite Terminal still dominates one side of the bay. Despite this industrial element, Discovery Bay is known for excellent snorkelling, tranquil all-inclusive resorts, and the Puerto Seco public beach. The Marine Laboratory of the University of the West Indies has operated here since 1965.
