Linstead
About Linstead
Linstead is one of Jamaica’s most culturally resonant towns — immortalised in the beloved folk song ‘Linstead Market’ (“Carry mi ackee go a Linstead Market, not a quattie wut sell”). The Saturday market has been a fixture of St Catherine’s interior for over two centuries, and the ackee trade that inspired the song continues to this day. The town is situated in a fertile valley on the main road between Kingston and the north coast, making it a key inland hub. Just south of Linstead, the dramatic Bog Walk Gorge — where the Rio Cobre cuts through sheer limestone cliffs — is one of Jamaica’s most spectacular natural road features. Linstead has a genuine, working Jamaican character that offers a refreshing contrast to the resort towns of the coast.
