- Transformation Church bought the former Unit Corporation headquarters in Tulsa for $35 million
- The six-storey tower covers 196,350 square feet
- The seller, Unit Corp, retained two floors of office space
- The church plans to grow in south Tulsa
A fast-growing Oklahoma church has bought a corporate office tower, The Christian Post reported in September 2021.
Transformation Church, led by Pastor Michael Todd and his wife Natalie, paid $35 million for the former headquarters of Unit Corporation in Tulsa. The six-storey building covers 196,350 square feet. As part of the deal, Unit Corp retained two floors of office space.
Broker Rick Guild said: “This sale positions the church for continued growth in south Tulsa and provides Unit Corp. the opportunity to retain two floors of office space.” According to the report, the church also intends to direct returns from its real estate into charitable work.
Todd linked the purchase to his teaching. “This has been an unbelievable journey for us,” he said. “This is a message of crazy faith. Because it’s only crazy until it happens.”
The deal is part of a trend of large churches buying commercial buildings rather than building new ones. Office towers offer parking, meeting rooms and space for staff and ministries, and a seller that stays on as a tenant can provide rental income while the church grows into the rest.
Jamaican churches seeking larger premises may find opportunities in commercial buildings, especially where offices have emptied. But a building bought with tenants in it makes the church a landlord, with leases, maintenance and tax questions to manage. Congregations should take professional advice on price, financing and the running of any shared building before committing.
