BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — Five vulnerable households in northern Barbados are to have their homes repaired under a private-sector programme launched in mid-December 2025, about three weeks after island-wide flooding in late November.
The initiative, called “From Our Home to Yours”, brings together Canadian construction company Aecon, Haigh Communications, the Rural and Urban Development Commission and the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), according to Barbados Today and CBC Barbados. The five homes had already been assessed, with work scheduled to begin in late December and finish in early 2026.
DEM Director Kerry Hinds said some of the damage dated back to Hurricane Beryl in 2024 and Tropical Storm Bret in 2023, and had been made worse by the recent flooding. Joy-Ann Haigh, chief executive of Haigh Communications, said the homes were chosen because their owners could not afford repairs, with priority for households that include children or elderly people. Aecon said its staff based on the island were volunteering their time.

What it means
Analysis: The programme is small, but it highlights a wider problem: storm and flood damage that accumulates in older homes when owners cannot afford repairs. That backlog affects insurability and the condition of homes that later come onto the resale market.
