A young Jamaican races towards his first home, carrying a mortgage, property deed and tax bill heavy enough to qualify as another bedroom. Behind him, the deadline looms large, red and unforgiving. Ahead sits the modest home he has worked and saved to afford.

The scene is playful, but the pressure is real. First-time buyers are already wrestling with deposits, legal fees, valuations and monthly mortgage payments. An approaching tax deadline adds another financial weight at precisely the moment they can least afford it.
He is not running away from homeownership. He is running desperately towards it. The trouble is, the taxman appears to have brought running shoes.
