Two homes once used by Methodist ministers were offered at auction in the West Midlands, Property Investor Today reported in October 2024.
The Methodist Church’s Birmingham Circuit offered two manses through auctioneer Bond Wolfe on 24 October 2024. The first was a three-bedroom detached house in Shirley, Solihull, with a guide price of £395,000-plus. The second was a four-bedroom semi-detached house in Rednal, with a guide price of £265,000-plus. The livestreamed auction included 184 lots.
“These two properties are in really good condition, which is no surprise given that they have been owned by The Methodist Church’s Birmingham Circuit,” said Ian Tudor, commercial auction director at Bond Wolfe. “The previous ownership of these properties is likely to make them both popular lots and we are expecting competitive bids on the day.”
The article did not say why the circuit was selling. Churches sell manses for several reasons, including fewer ministers, ministers who own their own homes, or a decision to provide different housing. Auction offers a quick sale with a fixed date, although the final price depends on the bidding.
The auctioneer’s comment points to a real advantage for church-owned homes: a reputation for being well maintained. Regular upkeep protects not only the minister living there but the value of the asset when the time comes to sell.
Many Jamaican denominations also own manses. Keeping a maintenance schedule and good records adds value, whether the house is kept for ministers or eventually sold. Where a manse is no longer needed, a sale or long lease can release funds for ministry or for housing that better suits today’s clergy.
