Fire Hits a Nassau Church Just Before a $250,000 Renovation: Christ the King Assesses the Damage

• A fire damaged Christ the King Anglican Church in Ridgeland Park, Nassau
• Offices, items and a pantry behind the sanctuary were destroyed
• The main church suffered smoke damage
• The area had been set for a renovation priced at $250,000

A fire tore through part of Christ the King Anglican Church in Nassau, Bahamas, in June 2025, The Nassau Guardian reported.

The blaze at the Ridgeland Park church destroyed office space behind the sanctuary, along with items in the offices and the pantry. The main church suffered smoke damage. No one was hurt.

Archdeacon Dwight Rolle said: “The damage is extensive in that portion of the church.” He explained: “We realized that we had a fire, not in the main church, but in the area where we rest and where we house one of our offices.” The fire department, he said, “came in record time.”

The timing was painful. “Christ the King was getting ready to do some major renovations in that portion of the church,” Rolle said. The renovation had been priced at $250,000. Even so, he said: “It is unfortunate … but, you know, beauty comes out of ashes, and so we are still thankful to God that there was no harm to life.” Clean-up began at once, and the church planned to hold services that weekend.

Church offices and pantries are often in older, less-maintained parts of a building, with electrical wiring, cooking equipment and stored goods close together. A fire there can threaten the whole church and destroy records, equipment and supplies for outreach programmes.

Jamaican churches should treat fire safety as seriously as hurricane preparation: have wiring checked by a qualified electrician, keep extinguishers serviced, store records off site or digitally, and make sure insurance covers the whole building and its contents. A renovation budget can vanish in a single night if the property is not protected.
