KINGSTON, Jamaica — The United States (US) dollar on Monday, August 4, ended trading at $161.13, down 11 cents, according to the Bank of Jamaica’s daily foreign exchange trading summary.
The Canadian dollar closed at $117.17, up from $116.74, while the British pound ended at $213.67, down from its previous close of $216.54.
The Jamaican dollar strengthened against the US dollar and the pound but slipped against the Canadian dollar in the first session after the Emancipation Day holiday.

What it means for property buyers and the diaspora
With Independence celebrations drawing many overseas Jamaicans home, rates matter for anyone planning to finalise a purchase during the visit. A drop of almost three Jamaican dollars in the pound means UK-based buyers get less for their savings than a session earlier, while Canadian buyers gained slightly. For developers importing materials priced in US dollars, the modest move offered a small saving.
