$1.2 Million for the “Mountaintop” Church: Memphis’s Mason Temple Gets a Federal Upgrade

A church building at the heart of American civil rights history is to be renovated, Religion News Service reported in April 2026.

Mason Temple in Memphis, completed in 1945 after an earlier church burned down, is the world headquarters of the Church of God in Christ. On 3 April 1968, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech there, the night before he was killed.

A $1.2 million federal grant, secured by US Representative Steve Cohen as part of an $18 million package of congressional funding for Memphis projects, will modernise the building. Bishop Melton Timmons said the money will be used to “upgrade the church’s sound system and other technology”, and a foundation inspection and structural improvements are also planned. The package also includes $3.1 million for nearby Clayborn Temple, the staging area for the 1968 sanitation workers’ strike, which was damaged by fire in April 2025.

Presiding Bishop J. Drew Sheard described Mason Temple as a place where faith has always met history, and said the church would continue to honour that witness.

The grant shows how a church building’s historic value can open doors to public funding that ordinary congregations cannot reach. It also shows the hidden costs of older buildings: foundations and structure need inspection and investment, not just the visible spaces.

Jamaica has many churches of historic importance. Congregations that own them should document their history and condition, because clear records support applications for heritage funding and donations. Regular structural surveys are as important as new sound systems, since a building’s value rests on its foundations.
