The Backstory
The dream was simple. Buy a house, collect the keys, move in, and live happily ever after.
Unfortunately, nobody introduced the happy couple to the electricity bill.
This Daily Cartoon captures a familiar Jamaican predicament. A couple finally finds an affordable home, only to discover that owning the property is just the opening chapter of a much more expensive story.
Standing beneath a starry Jamaican sky, they face a signpost pointing in every direction: electricity, water, groceries, transport and maintenance. Every arrow leads to another expense. The only sign promising affordability points towards the house itself.
And therein lies the joke. Unfortunately, it is not particularly funny.
Across Jamaica, homeownership remains an important symbol of independence, security and achievement. Families save for years, make sacrifices, take out mortgages and sometimes depend on relatives overseas to help them secure a property. But the purchase price tells only half the story.
There is electricity to keep flowing, water to keep running, groceries to put on the table, transport to work and repairs that never seem to arrive at a convenient moment. When food, utility and transport costs rise, an apparently manageable mortgage can suddenly feel much heavier.
And then there are the larger homes. Some Jamaican families, including returning residents, build impressive properties through decades of sacrifice. Yet maintaining six bedrooms, an extensive roof, a large garden and ageing infrastructure can demand more than expected.
A beautiful house can become an expensive responsibility.
The cartoon exaggerates the confusion, but the underlying message deserves serious attention: affordability should not end when the keys change hands.
Prospective homeowners need to calculate the total cost of living in a property, not simply whether they qualify for the mortgage. Insurance, property taxes, utilities, transportation, maintenance and emergency savings all belong in the equation.
After all, a home should provide security, not become another source of financial insecurity.
The couple in the cartoon has found the house of their dreams. Now they just need to work out how to afford living in it.
And judging by those bills, they might need another job.
